Daniel Newman of Tonkon Torp LLP Selected as One of ABI's 2024 "40 Under 40"

Alexandria, Va. ABI announces that Daniel Newman of Tonkon Torp LLP (Portland, Ore.) has been selected as one of ABI’s “40 Under 40,” ABI’s award program that recognizes 40 of the top insolvency industry professionals under the age of 40. The honorees will be recognized at a special ceremony on Dec. 13 during ABI’s 2024 Winter Leadership Conference at The Phoenician Scottsdale in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Newman is a partner in Tonkon Torp LLP’s Litigation Department in Portland, Ore., where he focuses his work in bankruptcy, reorganization and insolvency and co-chairs the firm’s Government Law & Disputes Practice Group. He has been an estate professional for some of the largest chapter 11 cases in the Pacific Northwest, representing debtors, receivers and creditors of all kinds in state court litigation and out-of-court workouts. Newman also built and promoted the firm’s expertise in crypto assets and NFTs, especially as it relates to insolvency issues, leading to an engagement as ad hoc committee counsel in the BlockFi Inc. chapter 11 case.

Since 2022, Newman has been listed as an “Oregon Rising Star” by Super Lawyers and as a “One to Watch” by The Best Lawyers in America in the fields of Litigation – Bankruptcy and Commercial Litigation. He teaches a negotiations class for Lewis & Clark Law School as an adjunct professor, and he previously co-taught negotiations seminars at Gonzaga Law and at South Texas College of Law Houston. Newman is also a member of the Multnomah Bar Association.

Newman maintains an active pro bono practice, including participating in the Bankruptcy Court for the District of Oregon’s pro bono panel, forming and advising nonprofit clients and pursuing civil rights claims on behalf of a variety of clients. After serving on the Pioneer Courthouse Historical Society, he is now president of its board of directors, which includes every active judge on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals who sits in Oregon. In addition, as part of its 2022 class, Newman participated in the Portland Business Alliance’s Leadership Portland program, which is designed to cultivate and develop community leaders. His volunteer service also extends to serving on the board of directors of the Oregon Health Justice Center, a nonprofit law center focused on improving patient health through trauma-informed legal care in medical/legal partnerships. In addition, Newman is a former member of the board of trustees for Oregon Parks Forever, a nonprofit working to fund programs and projects that enhance the experience of using Oregon’s parks and forests.

“We are honored to celebrate the exceptional leaders within the 2024 class as they continue to make a significant impact both in their practice and in their communities,” said ABI Executive Director Amy Quackenboss. “As bankruptcy practice continues to evolve, this diverse collection of honorees will propel ABI and the insolvency community forward.”

The “40 Under 40” winners are distinguished by professional achievements and service and were selected by a group of experienced professionals from ABI’s current leadership. Now in its eighth year, the goal of ABI’s “40 Under 40” award program is not simply to create a one-time ceremony, but to fully engage those selected as future leaders in the insolvency profession and to build on the initiative each year.
